AR Rahman : Ekk Deewana Tha Music Review

Expectation  Music from AR Rahman always has a huge expectation. This time for Ekk Deewana Tha AR Rahman collaborates with Gautham Menon whose last hindi outing was RHTDM music of which was massively loved my all music lovers. This adds up to the expectation of this album. Moreover Javed Akhtar is ever dependable as a lyricist and overall a great album is expected for EKK Deewana Tha.

KYA HAI MOHABBAT : The album starts with a surprise! Normally an AR Rahman album do not start with him on the mike. But this time the master is straight on action and he starts in a positive note. Kya Hai Mohabbat is a song with strong vocals and simple arrangement but a very catchy tune. This track is a winner all the way and how Menon uses this on the film will be interesting to watch out for.

DOST HAI : This one starts with Naresh Iyer on a romantic note and then Jashpret jasz takes the mike to give a hip hop feel to this track. This track reminds me of AR Rahmans Blue theme and Gangsta Blues in Slumdog Millionaire. This track might not get mass appeal but will be loved by a particular audience group specially among the young generation. It seems to be a situational track and its success depends on how Menon uses it in the film.

AROMALE:  What does Aromale means? Well it means 'my beloved'. Sung by Malayalam composer Alphons Joseph and seriously this is a type of song that only Rahman can make. It reminds me of 'Aur Ho' from 'Rockstar'  but of course this two tracks are quite different. This track starts slowly but then picks its speed. Its a mix of rock music with Indian classical portion in the chorus, soft guitar score gives a country music feel to this song as well. Overall very different but wonderful composition. This track will probably not be an instant hit but will grow on listeners as time goes by.

HOSANA:  What can be said about Hosana. Melody, hip hop-rap, romantic portion as well as mournful portion ; all in one single song and that is Hosana for you! This is more than a mere song ; it is an experience of pure entertainment. It starts on a mournful note by Leon D'souza and then goes to romantic portion and then comes the rap portion only to make this track even more lovable. Wonderful lyrics, beautifully sung and not to forget Suzanna D'mellos humming in the background gives this track a perfect 10 on 10! Definitely one of the best of AR Rahman.

PHOOLON JAISI:  This one is soft romantic and really sweet. Clinton Cerejo starts this track on a soft romantic note but then comes a sudden twist with Kalyani Menon on the mike. Kalyani gives a old traditional feel to this romantic number and the music of shehnai adds a different dimension to this song. Not the best of Rahman but a decent hearing with above average rating.

SHARMINDA HOON: With already 5 wonderful songs, this album is doing real good and to make it even better AR Rahman is on the mike again with 'Sharminda hoon '. It starts on a soft melodious note by Madhusree and then Rahman joins on the second minute with a pain evident in his voice. The orchestration is another highlight of this song. Madhusree did a brilliant job,  Rahman at his very best and another hit addition of this album.

SUNLO ZARA: Shreya Ghoshal is finally here! She was missed in the previous song Sharminda hoon although Madhusree did a brilliant job! Sunlo Zara is a feel-good sort of song that gives a warm feeling. Spirited job by Rashid Ali and Shreya Ghoshal and although this track sounds like a regular hindi number but clever use of Shehnai by Rahman gives it a different feeling. An above average song but with so many hit songs in this album already, this one might not grab that extra attention.

Zohra JABEEN: This track has a dreamy guitar tune from its start to end and one can easily get lost in its magic! Decent job by Rashid Ali and an addictive composition by Rahman. This track has its own power and will addict listeners for quite a while. Another winning addition in this album.

BROKEN PROMISE: A lot of things have been already said about Aromale and this track seems to be the female version of Aromale. Its background music is similar to that of Aromale and Shreyas voice gives it a truly haunting feel.

MOMENTS IN KERALA:  A lovely piano number by Prabhakar in this instrumental. It sounds good and will be handy for background score.

JESSIES LAND:  It starts with Meghna humming to Hosana tune and then moving to Sharminda Hoon  tunes. Mehgna is supported by a wonderful piano work and this is a wrap up kind of track. Again it depends on how this is used in film especially as background score.

JESSIES DRIVING ME CRAZY:  I do not know how this song is going to be used in the film but just after hearing I got a feeling that it will be used in background when someone is running or driving a car. Not a typical Hindi song by Timmy and Sanjeev Thomas and honestly not a good one also. This album is full of wonderful songs and this could be the weakest of all. It has a Hollywood feel to it and seems to be a situational track.

Overall, EKK DEWAANA THA is a wonderful romantic album. A winner in every possible way. AR Rahman made a fusion of different genre of music in this album and it sounds soulful. A number of tracks are instantly catchy and there are some others that will slowly grow on listeners. It is hard to compare as AR Rahman has so many hit albums but this is undoubtedly one of his best.

My Verdict :  4/5
My favoutites - Hosana, Sharminda Hoon, Zohra Jabeen, Kya hai mohabbat, Aromale, Dost hai.
